Owen's kidneys

While pregnant, I had many sonograms to check on the developing Owen...and his kidneys. Monday, we had another sonogram...this time on Owen's kidneys (without me as a filter). Dr. P called me back yesterday with the results.

"It's not as good as I had hoped," Dr. P said. "He'll have to see a specialist. We don't have one that specializes in pediatric urology, here in San Angelo. Come in and let's weigh him and talk about what's next."

So we did that today. He now weighs 7 pounds, 12 ounces. He's gained 9 ounces in a week! So, that's good. His right kidney is quite enlarged, and his left kidney is slightly enlarged. He might have small-ish ureter tubes (the ones from the kidneys to the bladder), or he might have a blockage. The good news is that he's happy, gaining weight and eating and peeing and pooping just fine. But, with enlarged kidneys come the probability of kidney or bladder infections. So, my teeny-tiny baby is already starting on antibiotics, twice a day. We decided to go the San Antonio route, as far as specialists goes. The neonatologist at Brant's hospital recommended the doc there.

So, now we wait. We wait for the doc in San Antonio to call our Dr. P...and we wait for Dr. P to call us back (by 9 am tomorrow). We wait for an answer to the question of, does this need to happen now? As in tomorrow? OR, do we feel safe enough to let it wait until the middle of July, when we return from Ohio?

So, we wait and pray.
